The Cornucopia Foundation maintains the Environmental Learning Center, a unique one and a half acre outdoor classroom. At the ELC, Nature is Teacher and students learn to take care of their planet in innovative hands-on classes. The Learning Center classes teach environmental sustainability by introducing students to areas such as cutting-edge biomimicry, biodynamics and permaculture. In learningnature's exquisite chemistries and designs, they are laying the foundation for their own careers and the planet’s sustainability. The ELC’sclasses dovetail as much as possible with the State of California Education Standards and add the important subject of sustainability to the existing curriculum. ELC classes incorporate
Study topics include: Biomimicry, Permaculture, Composting & Worm Farming, Planting & Harvesting, Animals in Nature, Nature Journaling, and Native American Seven Generations.
The ELC is an outdoor classroom in collaboration with Cabrillo Elementary School, the Malibu Middle School and the Malibu High School, associated with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. The Cornucopia Foundation's intent, since the inception of this program, is to be a template for environmental education in other cities and states.
